Project to Connect 206 Volta Communities to Electricity Launched

A GH₵598 million electrification project will bring power to 206 communities across all 18 districts of Ghana's Volta Region. Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor launched the turnkey project at a durbar outside the Volta Regional Coordinating Council.

Byes and Ways, a local company, is implementing the project under the Rural Electrification Accelerated and Urban Intensification Initiative. Work is scheduled to finish within six months. The stated goals are to reduce poverty, create jobs and promote socioeconomic development through improved access to electricity.

Jinapor said the project would improve power access for communities without electricity and for areas requiring extensions. He also pointed to government investments in electricity transmission and power supply in Ho and elsewhere in the region, including a 161-kilovolt transmission line from Asiekpe to Ho.

The ministry will closely monitor the implementation of the projects to ensure quality, value for money and timely completion.

Construction has begun on a new power substation for the regional capital. The facility will provide Ho with a dedicated transformer and transmission lines, easing pressure on the existing infrastructure and improving reliability in Ho and surrounding communities. Tilt Engineering Limited is carrying out that project, which is expected to take 12 months.

Jinapor urged beneficiary communities, traditional authorities and the public to cooperate with contractors. “The ministry will closely monitor the implementation of the projects to ensure quality, value for money and timely completion,” he said. Regional Minister James Gunu said the projects would create stronger prospects for investment in tourism, agriculture and industry. Traditional leader Togbui Dagadu IX pledged the support of authorities in the region.
