Promised Road Paving Remains Stuck in Mud a Year Later, Accident Highlights Delays

A year has passed since the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) promised to pave the crucial road connecting Borja and Mbuyapey, yet the project remains stalled. This anniversary was marked by a fresh traffic accident, a stark reminder of the muddy conditions that plague the unpaved route and isolate entire communities whenever it rains.

The recent incident saw a vehicle lose control and end up on the roadside after navigating a deeply muddy section of the dirt track. The vehicle required towing to be freed from the mire. This accident underscores the precarious state of the approximately 30-kilometer road, which has been repeatedly announced for paving by national authorities but shows no visible progress.

Residents from both Borja and Mbuyapey traveled to the MOPC a year ago, seeking concrete action on the road project after decades of isolation and broken promises. At that time, MOPC officials assured them that the paving would be financed through a FONPLATA loan and that the project had completed technical studies and was progressing with administrative procedures for funding. However, twelve months later, the work has yet to begin, and the reality on the ground remains unchanged.

The persistent lack of a reliable, all-weather road significantly impacts daily life. Frequent accidents occur due to reduced vehicle traction in the mud, often necessitating the use of tractors or heavy-duty vehicles for rescue operations. Beyond personal vehicles, agricultural producers struggle to transport their harvests, while students, workers, and patients needing medical attention also face severe consequences from the ongoing isolation.
