Proposed Jakarta parking fee of 60,000 rupiah per hour sparks controversy, transport chief says it was an error

A proposed parking charge of 60,000 rupiah per hour for cars has triggered controversy in Jakarta, prompting an apology from the head of the city’s Transport Agency, Budi Awaluddin.

Budi said the figure had only been proposed and had not become a final decision. “This was a mistake on our part, and as the agency head, I apologize. At the time, we did not know that this proposed increase had been submitted,” he said during a working meeting with Commission B of the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives.

The controversy grew after committee chairman Jupiter said the proposal came from the Transport Agency. He made the claim after Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung denied that the figure originated with the provincial government. Jupiter said the agency had submitted the proposal during discussions on revising Jakarta’s 2024 regional tax and levy regulation.

Jupiter said the discussions took place without involving the parking committee or Commission B, which works with the Transport Agency. He said the 60,000-rupiah figure was not fabricated and appeared in the draft revision document he received.

The document proposed motorcycle parking fees ranging from 3,000 to 15,000 rupiah per hour. For sedans, jeeps, minivans, pickups and similar vehicles, it listed rates from 6,000 to 60,000 rupiah per hour. Jupiter also said the document contained possible maximum car fees of 100,000 and 150,000 rupiah.
