Proposing 'land-use rights housing' draws communist accusations; Shen Po-yang fights back

Taipei mayoral candidate Shen Po-yang is facing criticism for his proposals on urban renewal, specifically his suggestions of "rent-only" and "land-use rights housing." These ideas, aimed at increasing housing affordability and facilitating redevelopment, have drawn sharp attacks from opposing political figures.

DPP candidate Shen Po-yang presented these concepts as ways to address Taipei's pressing urban renewal issues. However, KMT Taipei City Councilor Lai Wei-wei questioned the safety of Taipei Metro facilities, linking it to Shen's proposal for "sports stations" at MRT exits. Meanwhile, KMT Taipei City Councilor You Yu-hsu claimed that land-use rights housing amounted to a "raising, trapping, and killing" scheme, accusing Shen of harboring communist ideals.

Shen Po-yang strongly refuted these accusations during a campaign event. He clarified that there are currently no reported cases of voyeurism in Taipei Metro restrooms, countering Lai Wei-wei's claims as slanderous to frontline colleagues and Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an. Shen argued that comparing a staffed "sports station" to an unstaffed public restroom inherently highlights the safety benefits of the former. He defended his colleagues' efforts in crime prevention, stating they have achieved certain results.

Addressing You Yu-hsu's criticism, Shen emphasized that policy discussions should be healthy and constructive. He acknowledged that urban renewal in Taipei faces significant hurdles, likening the situation to a "traffic jam" where many want to participate but few can. Shen reiterated that providing diverse housing options, including affordable housing, rent-only models, and land-use rights housing, is crucial to encourage residents to return to redeveloped areas. He criticized the opposition's approach of singling out one proposal and using "smear" tactics, questioning whether current urban renewal efforts in Taipei truly satisfy public demand.
