Prosecutors investigate Viacha explosions as negligent homicide

Bolivia's Public Prosecutor's Office opened an ex officio investigation into negligent homicide and negligent injuries after explosions at military facilities in Viacha.

La Paz departmental prosecutor Luis Carlos Torrez said the office sent personnel from the Institute of Forensic Investigations, forensic doctors and a criminalistics team to work with the Bolivian Police. Their task is to establish how the explosions occurred and what caused them.

Investigators recovered two bodies and planned to transfer them to the Public Prosecutor's Office morgue for medico-legal autopsies. The examinations are intended to determine the causes of death and provide evidence for the case.

The investigation is beginning for the offenses of negligent homicide and negligent injuries.

Forensic work inside the affected area remains limited. Torrez said firefighters had determined that conditions were not yet safe enough for investigators to collect all available evidence. Teams planned to continue during the early morning and return when they could enter safely.

The investigation will also check whether other bodies are present. Authorities plan to map the affected area, record the location of recovered items and reconstruct the circumstances of the explosions, including any possible criminal responsibility.
