Prosecutors Raid Jeju Police Offices Over Alleged False Closure of Missing-Person Cases

Prosecutors investigating allegedly false closures of missing-person cases in Jeju raided the Jeju Provincial Police Agency and Jeju Western Police Station on the 8th.

The Jeju District Prosecutors’ Office searched the agency’s criminal affairs division and the Western Station chief’s office, among other locations, to secure investigative materials. The investigation focuses on a police officer in his 30s from the Western Station, who faces allegations of dereliction of duty and falsifying electronic public records.

The officer allegedly closed a missing-person report involving a woman in her 30s on May 15 and another involving a man in his 60s on July 2 as false closures. The provincial police agency conducted a full review of missing-person cases following the allegations and identified 25 cases involving false closures, deleted records or other improper handling.

The police had already placed the former and current chiefs of the Western Station, as well as the station’s criminal affairs chief and missing-persons team leader, on standby duty over responsibility for the cases.
