Protected Hawk Rescued After Crashing Into Indonesian Home While Hunting

A Crested Goshawk, a protected bird of prey in Indonesia, was rescued in Gresik after it collided with a house window while attempting to catch a pet bird. The incident occurred when the hawk, identified as Lophospiza trivirgata, misjudged its target and struck the glass with considerable force.

The hawk, disoriented by the impact, fell to the ground and was unable to fly. The homeowner, Suhadi, and his family quickly secured the distressed bird with a cloth and placed it in a temporary cage to prevent further injury or distress. They then contacted the East Java Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA Jawa Timur).

Wildlife officers from the BBKSDA Jawa Timur's Matawali Resort confirmed the bird was alive but in shock upon their arrival. The Crested Goshawk is protected under Indonesian law and listed on Appendix II of CITES, meaning international trade is regulated to protect the species.

Initial examinations indicated the goshawk was conscious and alert but potentially suffering from unseen injuries due to the forceful collision. To ensure its well-being, the bird was transported to the BBKSDA Jawa Timur's Wildlife Rescue Unit in Sidoarjo for a thorough veterinary examination and further observation.
