Protesters Block Santa Cruz-Beni Route Again After Police Dispersal

Protesters in Bolivia's Beni province have resumed their blockade of the vital Santa Cruz-Beni route, escalating their demonstration after a police operation to clear the San Pablo bridge. The productive sectors are demanding the repeal of decree 5657, citing severe diesel shortages and increased prices for large producers.

The situation turned tense when police used chemical agents to disperse the demonstrators earlier in the day. While authorities aimed to restore traffic, the intervention reportedly resulted in injuries, including one described as serious, which fueled the protesters' anger and resolve to continue their action.

Sources from the blockade indicated that several people were injured during the police operation, with unofficial reports suggesting one individual lost part of a hand. This has intensified the demonstrators' commitment to their cause and led to the reinforcement of the protest.

Despite previous attempts at mediation and the imposition of an State of Exception that prioritizes essential rights like transit, the protesters have chosen to maintain the road closure. The blockade significantly disrupts transportation and economic activity between the two departments, affecting both producers and consumers.
