Protesters decry "mass migration" of Moroccans in Madrid; "Christian Spain!"

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Moroccan embassy in Madrid on Friday to voice their opposition to the recent large-scale arrival of migrants in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The demonstrators, many dressed in black, expressed anger and concern over what they described as an "invasion."

Chants of "Christian Spain and not Muslim!" and "National unity!" echoed outside the diplomatic mission. Some participants carried a large banner promoting the term "Remigración," a concept favored by some far-right groups in Europe advocating for the forced or incentivized return of migrants. Spanish flags were also prominent among the crowd, with calls to defend "Spanish identity."

The protest highlighted deep divisions and anxieties surrounding migration. Tragically, at least 34 people reportedly died attempting to reach Ceuta. While the Spanish government stated that most of the approximately 60,000 people who arrived in recent days had returned to Morocco, the protest underscored lingering tensions.

The demonstrators also directed criticism at the Spanish socialist government of Pedro Sánchez, accusing it of "selling" Spain to Muslims and of presiding over an "uncontrolled crisis." The protest saw a heavy police presence, including aerial surveillance, to maintain order. Disturbingly, some individuals were observed making Nazi salutes openly.
