Protesting Court Decision, Lawyers Claim KPK Detention Center Lacks Medical Staff for Yaqut

The legal team representing former Indonesian Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas has voiced strong objections to a court's refusal to change his detention status from a KPK detention center to house arrest. Yaqut, who faces charges related to alleged corruption in the management of additional Hajj quotas, had sought the transfer citing specific medical requirements.

Dodi S Abdulkadir, one of Yaqut's lawyers, stated that a doctor's recommendation explicitly outlined special conditions that the KPK detention center is allegedly unable to fulfill. "Until now, every day there must be a visit from medical personnel to the KPK detention center because the KPK detention center is unable to provide these medical personnel," Dodi told Republika, Wednesday.

This medical necessity, according to the defense, necessitates daily visits from medical staff, as the detention center supposedly lacks the capacity to provide the required care. The lawyers argue that these specific needs cannot be adequately met within the current detention facility, forming the basis of their appeal for house arrest.

However, the presiding judge, Ni Kadek Susantiani, previously stated during a trial at the Tipikor Court in Central Jakarta that the medical needs cited by Yaqut could indeed be accommodated within the KPK detention center. This ruling directly contradicts the defense's claims and forms the crux of the current legal protest.
