PSD accuses USR of sabotaging new government formation

Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD) has accused the opposition USR party of deliberately undermining the formation of a new government. PSD stated that the Political Agreement, initially requested by the President and agreed upon in principle by pro-Western parliamentary parties, is now being "subverted with full knowledge by USR."

The PSD claims that USR's "unacceptable and inapplicable demands" are prolonging Romania's political crisis, with significant economic and social consequences. They argue against a scenario where Romania would have a minority PNL-USR-UDMR government led by a right-wing prime minister for six months, followed by a PSD-only government. PSD views USR's demand for a rotating premiership as a "petty trick" designed to secure state positions and sinecures, masking their desperation.

Social Democrats emphasize the critical need for governmental stability to maintain the country's rating and reduce state financing costs. They assert that USR's "evasions" are disconnected from Romania's economic and social realities and do not aim to resolve issues for the benefit of Romanians. PSD maintains it is participating in discussions with good faith to finalize a Political Agreement on Romania's fundamental strategic objectives.

The USR's claim of 'rotation' is in fact a petty trick through which they always change the conditions to make the result impossible and actually mask the desperation to benefit from positions and sinecures in the state. Nothing else!

PSD has nominated Sorin Grindeanu as their candidate for prime minister. Grindeanu stated that PSD will have full autonomy over the governing program and that a PSD government will not be subservient to anyone. He declared, "PSD will play exclusively on its own hand. The objective is simple: economic relaunch and regaining the trust of Romanians in the political class. (...) I reject any pact on positions, only on ideas that offer prosperity."
