Timișoara Mayor Fritz to Appeal Conflict of Interest Ruling at European Court of Human Rights

Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz plans to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights after Romania's High Court of Cassation and Justice upheld a decision finding him in conflict of interest. This ruling bars him from running for public office until 2030.

Fritz, a leader in the USR party, described the sanction as "extremely serious" and "completely disproportionate." He accused the National Integrity Agency (ANI) of overlooking significant issues to focus on trivialities. "The state of Romania can be summoned to review the sanction, for example. It is not at all excluded," Fritz stated, explaining his motivation for pursuing the case at the ECHR.

The High Court's decision on June 18, 2026, rejected Fritz's appeal against the ANI's incompatibility report. The court confirmed the Timișoara Court of Appeal's finding of a conflict of interest. Fritz, however, remains defiant, citing the mandate given to him by Timișoara's residents and the support of his USR colleagues.
