PSD leader Grindeanu rejects salary law, threatens legal action against Bolojan: 'PSD will not vote for austerity'

The leader of Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD), Sorin Grindeanu, has declared his party's firm opposition to any salary law that introduces austerity measures, warning it would impoverish Romanians and damage the health and education systems. Grindeanu specifically criticized proposed cuts to bonuses and guard payments, estimating substantial monthly salary reductions for doctors and nurses. He also highlighted concerns for teachers, noting that a starting professor's net salary would be only 4,557 lei, with experienced educators capped at around 7,100 lei.

Grindeanu asserted that the PSD would not approve measures that eliminate doctorates or leadership allowances, nor would they accept a mechanism that freezes future salary increases indefinitely. He recalled the PSD's past efforts to raise salaries in healthcare and education to combat specialist emigration, vowing to block any actions that undermine these sectors. The party also plans to challenge recent government decisions.

We cannot conceive that a specialist doctor from ICU or Emergency will lose between 3,000 and 4,000 lei per month, by cutting bonuses for particularly dangerous conditions and restricting guard payments.

"PSD jurists are analyzing this weekend whether the decisions made in the last two government meetings exceed the limited legal competencies of the dismissed Cabinet," Grindeanu stated. "If we find that Bolojan and his team have violated the law, we will immediately file criminal complaints or initiate administrative lawsuits." He urged the caretaker government to submit all PNRR-related projects to Parliament for debate, emphasizing their importance for securing billions of euros.

We will not vote for a project that makes the allowance for a doctorate disappear, the leadership allowance or the bonus for neuro-psychic overstrain! And we will not accept the perfidious mechanism by which any future 'increase' will be deducted from a transitional difference. Because that means teachers' salaries will be frozen indefinitely!
