Why Fedorov rejects Zelenskyy's offer: The stakes of tough negotiations and the scenario of the former minister's political ambitions

A political impasse persists between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, with neither side showing signs of compromise regarding Fedorov's potential return to the government. Despite the removal of Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, a key demand of protesters, Fedorov has not rejoined the cabinet, and negotiations with Zelenskyy are ongoing.

Sources cited by Kyiv Independent indicate that negotiations are continuing, but positions remain unchanged. This situation follows several days of protests triggered by Fedorov's dismissal, with organizers announcing a three-day pause. They plan to resume demonstrations if their demands are not met. One of the two primary demands – the dismissal of Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi – has been fulfilled. However, the second demand, Fedorov's return to lead the Ministry of Defense, has not materialized.

Adding complexity to the situation, President Zelenskyy reportedly offered Fedorov a significant executive role focused on coordinating the state's technological development. However, Ukrainian media reports suggest Fedorov declined this offer, maintaining his stance on returning only as Defense Minister. Presidential advisor Dmytro Lytvyn confirmed that discussions between Zelenskyy and Fedorov will continue, though Fedorov has not publicly commented on the offer.

Presidential administration sources suggest Zelenskyy does not intend to reinstate Fedorov as Defense Minister. Instead, the President's offer aims to leverage Fedorov's expertise in technology and defense modernization. Fedorov's silence on the offer and his continued insistence on his former post fuel speculation about his future political aspirations, with some suggesting he might be eyeing a presidential candidacy. The protests, dubbed "Cardboard Maidan," have undeniably shifted the political agenda, highlighting public support for Fedorov and his perceived contributions to modernizing the army and developing drone programs.
