PUD reaffirms commitment to democratic solution in Venezuela

The Unitary Democratic Platform (PUD) has reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing a democratic, constitutional, and peaceful resolution for Venezuela, two years after the contested 2024 presidential elections. The opposition coalition stated that the mandate for change expressed by Venezuelans on July 28, 2024, "remains valid." The PUD marked the anniversary by highlighting the peaceful, civic, and democratic expression of millions of citizens who desired change.

The coalition expressed pride in supporting Venezuelans through the electoral process, asserting that the victory attributed to María Corina Machado's leadership and Edmundo González Urrutia's candidacy "cannot be erased by the passage of time." The PUD paid tribute to those who defended the vote, political prisoners, the persecuted, and exiles, as well as all Venezuelans who have "kept democratic hope alive amid adversity."

In a statement, the PUD reiterated its dedication to achieving a "democratic, constitutional, peaceful, and sustainable solution" that allows Venezuelans to freely decide their future. The group noted that the significance of July 28 "remains valid" as an expression of popular will. This anniversary occurs amidst new initiatives for a negotiated exit from Venezuela's political crisis, with recent reports indicating contacts for a negotiation process. The PUD insists that any progress must lead to the restoration of democratic guarantees and free elections.
