Pulisic Deeply Disappointed as US Eliminated from World Cup in Round of 16

Christian Pulisic described the U.S. men's national team's exit from the 2026 World Cup as "very disappointing." The Americans were decisively beaten 4-1 by Belgium in the Round of 16 on Tuesday at Seattle's Lumen Field, ending their tournament run.

"Until today we were very proud of our journey. We did many things well, but the way we ended this tournament was certainly very disappointing," Pulisic said, according to FIFA's official website. The loss dashed the hopes of the host nation to advance further in the quadrennial tournament.

The U.S. initially showed promise, equalizing Malik Tillman's 31st-minute free-kick to make it 1-1 after Belgium's Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring in the ninth minute. However, De Ketelaere quickly restored Belgium's lead just two minutes later, heading into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.

Belgium extended their dominance in the second half, with Hans Vanaken scoring in the 57th minute and Romelu Lukaku sealing the victory with a goal in stoppage time. "We faced a very good and very clinical team in both penalty boxes, while we were unable to do the same. The game was won in those areas, and today we were not good enough," Pulisic, playing in his second World Cup, reflected.

Defender Chris Richards attempted to find a silver lining, expressing hope that reaching the Round of 16 serves as a starting point for the young U.S. squad. "Hopefully, this is just the beginning for this group of players and our federation. I think at least reaching the quarterfinals should be our standard in the future. Hopefully, we have laid the foundation for the next generation," Richards stated. The U.S. team's elimination means the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals will proceed without a host nation, as Canada and Mexico also exited in the same round. Belgium will face Spain next.
