Punch, the Japanese Macaque Viral for His Plush Toy, Celebrates First Birthday

Punch, the Japanese macaque who captured global attention with his inseparable plush toy, marked his first birthday on Sunday at the Ichikawa city zoo, east of Tokyo. Abandoned at birth, the young macaque found solace in an orangutan plush toy, which became a surrogate maternal figure, fostering a deep bond that turned him into a major zoo attraction.

The zoo was inundated with well-wishes, receiving over 2,500 congratulatory cards from both Japan and international fans. Approximately one thousand of these cards are currently on display in the zoo's resting area. Due to the sheer volume, the exhibition, initially planned until August 9, will be divided into two phases, with a rotation of cards scheduled to begin on August 11 and conclude on August 30.

Hundreds of visitors braved rain, thunder, and high temperatures to celebrate Punch's milestone. This turnout was comparable to the crowds that flocked to the zoo earlier in the year when the macaque's story went viral. Punch was initially rejected by his mother shortly after birth in July 2025 and was subsequently raised by zoo staff, who provided him with the comforting plush toy that became his constant companion.

His unique bond with the toy significantly boosted the zoo's visitor numbers, highlighting the public's fascination with the macaque's heartwarming story. The zoo continues to share updates via its social media profile on X, formerly Twitter, keeping fans engaged with Punch's development.
