Punjab Governor Orders Merit-Based Selection Rules for Aitchison College

Punjab Governor, in his capacity as president of Aitchison College's Board of Governors, has mandated the formulation of merit-based selection policies for student leadership roles. The directive, issued via a letter to the college principal on August 13, aims to instill fairness, transparency, and uniformity in the selection of prefects and other positions in sports and academics.

The governor's instructions extend beyond student appointments, calling for similar meritocratic principles in the selection and promotion of housemasters, as well as academic and administrative staff. He emphasized that these policies, once approved by the Board of Governors, should be publicly accessible on the college's website and social media platforms.

These directives come amidst allegations of nepotism circulating on social media, particularly concerning the appointment of college prefects and recommendations for foreign university admissions. Parents have claimed that students with poor academic records were given leadership roles and recommended for international universities despite subpar grades. The Aitchison College Old Boys’ Association (ACOBA) has strongly refuted these claims, defending the principal and the institution's integrity.

While the college principal declined to comment directly on the allegations, the ACOBA issued a response addressing the social media discourse. The situation highlights a tension between the governor's push for standardized, merit-based procedures and existing concerns regarding fairness and transparency within the prestigious institution.
