Punjab leads Pakistan in threats against journalists

Punjab province leads Pakistan in reported threats against journalists, with 15 cases documented between April and June 2026. This figure represents a significant portion of the 22 total incidents recorded across the country during that quarter, according to a review by Freedom Network.

The review, which assesses threats to media and journalists in Pakistan, also noted a decrease in documented cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, falling from five to three. Sindh and Balochistan each reported one case in both the first and second quarters, while Islamabad Capital Territory and Gilgit-Baltistan each had one case in the second quarter. No verified incidents were reported from Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The Freedom Network's findings highlight a growing concern regarding the role of state institutions in intimidating media practitioners. Journalists focusing on corruption and governance issues appear to be the most susceptible to these threats. The documented violations encompass a range of actions, including six instances of actual legal action against media personnel.
