Puracé volcano activity increases with ash emissions in southwest Colombia

The Puracé volcano in southwestern Colombia has significantly increased its seismic activity, accompanied by gas emissions and ash plumes that have reached altitudes of up to 2,100 meters, according to the Colombian Geological Service (SGC). This heightened volcanic activity is occurring as the region braces for the presidential inauguration of Abelardo De La Espriella, scheduled for August 7 in the Cauca department.

Cristian Santacoloma, coordinator of the SGC's Popayán Volcanological and Seismological Observatory, reported a "significant increase in seismicity associated with the dynamics of gases within the volcanic conduits." The SGC has detected ash emissions over the past week, leading to the temporary suspension of flights at Popayán airport, the departmental capital. Thermal imaging cameras have recorded gas temperatures as high or higher than those observed during a similar episode in 2025.

The Puracé volcano and the surrounding Coconucos volcanic chain remain at an "yellow" alert level, indicating potential for increased activity or new emissions. The SGC advises the public against accessing the upper parts of the volcanic chain and urges them to rely solely on official information channels and follow the guidance of local authorities. Residents in the rural area of Puracé have reported ashfall on crops and homes.

The heightened volcanic activity coincides with preparations for President-elect De La Espriella's inauguration, which is planned to take place in Cauca following an exceptional approval by the Senate. The potential logistical impact of the volcanic phenomenon on the ceremony's arrangements remains a consideration, pending a final vote by the House of Representatives and a decision on the venue.
