Lara had long felt her life had taken a different path than she'd envisioned. You would think Lere my husband would appreciate the extra money. The business centre he set up when he was retrenched wasn’t bringing in much and that really frustrated him. When we argued, he said lots of things – that I didn’t know when to shut up, that I looked like the back of an elephant. He even complained I came home reeking of kitchen fume.

Motivated by his criticism, Lara began to spruce herself up, buying new clothes and experimenting with makeup, enjoying the attention she received. The turning point came nine months prior to the account, when a top official, whom Lara refers to as Leo, asked her to prepare a meal for him as he worked late. The rest of the canteen staff had left, so Lara handled the meal herself.

Thanks to his criticism, I spruced myself up a bit. I got some new clothes I could afford and tried applying make-up. The staff teased me but I enjoyed the attention.

As she served Leo, he invited her to sit with him. During their conversation, Lara noticed a photo of his three sons. The intimate setting of the office, combined with Leo's friendly demeanor, made Lara realize she missed intimacy. In a moment of impulse, she kissed Leo, who reciprocated passionately. The encounter quickly escalated physically.
