Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed his main ally, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, to his Novo-Ogaryovo residence on August 29, 2026. Putin highlighted the strong economic ties between the two nations, noting that trade turnover reached nearly $52 billion last year. He reported a 12.5% growth in the first half of the current year, despite external sanctions. Russia's direct investment in Belarus amounts to $4.5 billion, with approximately 2,500 Russian-participated companies operating there. Putin specifically pointed to successful cooperation in high-tech sectors as especially important.

Lukashenko, who arrived in Russia on Thursday, also met with Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and other ministers. His visit, supporting Russia's campaign in Ukraine, follows Gallagher's call for an end to the war and Ratcliffe's secret visit, which fueled speculation about warnings against potential NATO attacks and Russia's strategic calculations regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
