Putin tells Trump’s envoys that Russia’s army will achieve its goals in Ukraine

Vladimir Putin told U.S. presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner that Russia would continue working with the United States toward a political and diplomatic settlement, while the Russian army would achieve its stated objectives in Ukraine.

Yuri Ushakov, an adviser on international policy to the Russian presidency, said the Kremlin discussions highlighted what he called the Russian army’s “genuine successes” in its advance along the front. He said the meeting also expressed confidence that Russia would achieve its objectives.

Ushakov said Putin stressed the need to eliminate “all the original causes of the conflict” and confirmed Moscow’s willingness to continue joint work with the Americans on a political and diplomatic settlement. He described the meeting, which lasted three hours and 10 minutes, as “substantial, constructive and very frank and trusting.” Economic issues and other current matters also came up.

According to Ushakov, Putin again thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for his “sincere desire to contribute to a prompt, mutually acceptable solution.” He said the two presidents would continue maintaining personal contact.

The American mediators, Ushakov added, promised to consider Putin’s assessments and observations during their contacts in Kyiv on Sunday, where they were expected to consult with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He said the envoys had prepared carefully and presented several ideas for reaching a settlement, alongside their interest in an early end to military action. The meeting took place in Moscow after an eight-month pause, and Ushakov called it useful and timely.
