Qantas to launch longest flight in world with over 20 hour Sydney to London route

Qantas is set to redefine long-haul travel by launching the world's longest commercial flight, a direct route connecting Sydney and London. Scheduled to commence in October 2027, the journey is expected to take between 19 and 21 hours, depending on wind conditions and the chosen flight path.

This ambitious venture, dubbed "Project Sunrise," aims to eliminate layovers on one of the world's most demanding travel routes. The initiative has been in development for nearly a decade, with Qantas challenging aircraft manufacturers in 2017 to create planes capable of such extended flights. Airbus ultimately secured the order for 12 specialized A350-1000ULR aircraft.

These ultra-long-range planes are not standard models. They feature substantial structural modifications, including an additional 20,000-liter fuel tank, extending their range to over 16,000 kilometers and enabling flights of up to 22 hours. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, these aircraft require advanced fuel management systems and a higher maximum takeoff weight.

Extensive testing and certification are underway. In June 2026, the first test aircraft, MSN707, completed its maiden flight in Toulouse, France. A comprehensive two-month campaign is evaluating new fuel systems, cooling mechanisms, cabin comfort, and overall performance under extended flight conditions. The focus is on ensuring passenger comfort and safety throughout the unprecedented journey.
