Qatar PM to visit Tehran to restart mediation efforts

Qatar's Prime Minister is set to visit Tehran in a bid to relaunch diplomatic efforts, following recent exchanges between the United States and Iran. The US has threatened to increase economic pressure on Tehran by targeting its trade partners with further sanctions, leading to recriminations from Iran.

Qatar, a Gulf neighbor to Iran and an ally of the US, has historically served as a crucial back-channel negotiator. The country played a direct role in securing a ceasefire in June, which briefly halted hostilities. This visit comes as the conflict nears its sixth month, with fighting largely paused but no diplomatic breakthrough on the horizon.

A key point of contention remains the control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global oil supplies. Iran has used its strategic position in the strait as leverage. The memorandum of understanding that led to the June ceasefire reportedly faltered partly due to disagreements over the narrow waterway, through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes.

While the US military's Central Command has not reported attacks on Iran for nearly a month, Washington appears to be focusing on economic pressure. Oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz have decreased significantly, dropping to a three-month low. Before the conflict, the strait handled approximately 20 million barrels of crude oil per day, a stark contrast to the current five million barrels per day.

During his visit, Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani will discuss the continuation of Qatar's mediation efforts and other regional developments, according to Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson. Qatar's Foreign Ministry has stated that the Prime Minister will also address freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the necessity of returning to the pre-conflict status quo, alongside exploring avenues with Iranian officials to "de-escalate tensions and create the conditions conducive to dialogue."
