Quantum tech roadmap effort starts to accelerate

Thailand's Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry is set to accelerate the development of its national quantum technology roadmap, aiming to harness advanced supercomputing capabilities to enhance public services. The initiative prioritizes applications in public health and agriculture, with the overarching goal of positioning Thailand as a major food powerhouse and addressing the societal challenges posed by a rapidly aging population.

Deputy DES Minister Nan Boonthida Somchai highlighted at the Thailand Quantum Readiness Workshop on July 24 that quantum technology has transitioned from theoretical research to a critical industrial necessity. This push for readiness aligns with increasing global awareness, exemplified by a recent U.S. executive order mandating federal agencies prepare for quantum technology, particularly concerning encryption and data security.

While artificial intelligence (AI) has dominated recent tech trends, Ms. Nan noted that Thailand has been monitoring quantum technology developments for several years. The government's role is to create a supportive legal and regulatory environment, enabling the private sector to innovate confidently. "Technology often outpaces the law, and the government is working to update legislation as quickly as possible to ensure safety and stability for private investment," Ms. Nan stated.

A quantum technology subcommittee will be established under the National Board of Digital Economy and Society Office, similar to the existing AI committee. Ms. Nan clarified that quantum technology differs from AI, often serving as a supporting tool or backup system for future innovation rather than direct user interaction. A key aspect of the roadmap involves applying quantum supercomputing to social issues, revolutionizing medical research, drug discovery, and diagnostic accuracy to improve public health. The ministry aims for broad societal benefit from this technology, applying it to fundamental human needs like food, medicine, and energy amidst global instability.
