Quito Begins Second Phase of 12 de Octubre Avenue Rehabilitation Near Universities

Quito is advancing its urban infrastructure improvements with the commencement of the second phase of rehabilitation work on the vital 12 de Octubre Avenue. This section of the avenue, located near several major universities, is undergoing significant upgrades.

The latest phase, which began on Saturday, August 29, 2026, targets the north-south lane between Calle Madrid and Avenida Patria. This segment spans approximately 740 meters. The municipality plans to conduct the work continuously, seven days a week, aiming to expedite the process and restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.

This new phase follows the successful completion of the south-north lane's rehabilitation in the same stretch. According to the Quito Municipality, that initial work finished 11 days ahead of schedule, and the lane is now open to traffic. This section provides direct access to the Salesiana, Católica, and Politécnica Nacional universities.

During the 15-day intervention period, public transportation will continue using designated alternative routes along Calle Madrid, Isabel la Católica, Mena Caamaño, Veintimilla, Leonidas Plaza, and Avenida Patria. Light vehicles will be directed to use Calle Mariscal Foch, Avenida 6 de Diciembre, and Tarqui as alternatives, facilitating travel towards the city center and southern areas.

Authorities are advising drivers to plan their journeys in advance and pay close attention to safety signage. The municipality aims to complete these crucial roadworks before the start of the academic year, gradually restoring regular circulation on this key avenue. Updates on the project's progress and traffic conditions will be shared through the official channels of the Quito Municipality and the Metropolitan Public Company of Mobility and Public Works (Epmmop).
