Quito court sentences man who assaulted traffic agent to 2 years and 8 months in prison

A court in Ecuador has sentenced the person responsible for attacking a Quito traffic agent to two years and eight months in prison.

The incident occurred on Aug. 28, 2023, while the agent carried out traffic-control duties in the IESS Quito Sur area. The assault caused an incapacity period of between nine and 30 days and resulted in a skull fracture.

After an initial ruling, Quito’s Metropolitan Transit Agency, known as AMT, filed an appeal. The case went before the specialized criminal and traffic chamber of the Pichincha Provincial Court, which determined on Aug. 31, 2026, that the person was responsible for attack or resistance.

The judgment also ordered a fine equivalent to 10 unified basic salaries and $2,000 in comprehensive compensation for the affected officer. AMT announced the decision in a statement issued on Sept. 4, 2026.

The agency said the ruling reaffirmed its commitment to defending civil traffic agents. It also said it respects citizens’ rights and legitimate complaints, but argued that disagreement with a procedure does not justify violence or disrespect toward officers.
