Quito's Ruta Viva Rehabilitation to Begin August 15

Quito is set to commence significant rehabilitation work on the Ruta Viva, a key artery connecting the city to its eastern valleys. Starting August 15, the Metropolitan Public Company of Mobility and Public Works (EPMMOP) will initiate a project aimed at revitalizing the road infrastructure.

The comprehensive plan targets five specific sections of the Ruta Viva. Work will begin in the Tolagasi and Pachosalas sector, followed by Cochapamba, La Cerámica to El Escalón Tumbaco, General Eloy Alfaro Avenue to El Escalón Lumbisí, and concluding near the El Chiche Bridge. The entire project is slated for completion by the end of the year, with an estimated execution period of 120 days.

To manage the inevitable traffic disruptions, the EPMMOP has devised a sequential approach. Work will first focus on one lane of traffic for 12 days, followed by the opposite lane for 13 days. Throughout the process, at least one lane will remain open to ensure continued, albeit potentially slower, circulation.

Enhanced traffic management will be in place, including informative signage and close collaboration with the Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT). Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, adhere to temporary traffic signals, and allow for extra travel time. The rehabilitation aims to improve travel times, enhance safety through better signage and speed control devices, and ultimately provide optimal road infrastructure for Quito's metropolitan district.
