Quito to Implement New Road Closures Starting August 1 for Metro Area Street Rehabilitation

Quito is set to commence a significant street rehabilitation project on August 1, impacting nine key roads throughout the city's north, center, and south. The Empresa Pública Metropolitana de Movilidad y Obras Públicas (Epmmop) is spearheading the initiative, aiming to enhance circulation for drivers, pedestrians, and public transport users, with a particular emphasis on routes near Metro de Quito stations.

The rehabilitation work will be carried out in phases, necessitating partial road closures to maintain traffic flow. The city plans to leverage the holiday season to expedite the construction. To mitigate the impact on residents, businesses, and commuters, the Municipality will establish alternative routes and implement comprehensive mobility plans.

In the southern part of the city, work will begin in the Ninallacta neighborhood, where streets S41 and S42 will undergo 90 days of construction. These roads connect to Avenida Mariscal Sucre near the Quitumbe terminal. Drivers can use Guayanay Ñan, La Ecuatoriana, Rumichaca Ñan, and Avenida Mariscal Sucre as alternatives. Additionally, streets Hernando de Benavente and Diego de Palomino, near the Cardenal de la Torre station, will also see 90 days of partial closures. In the Orquídeas neighborhood, 1,135 meters of Gonzalo Escudero street will be rehabilitated over 120 days, with partial closures and contraflows.

Further north, the Miraflores neighborhood will see 1,173 meters of Asunción street undergo repairs for 30 days. Commuters heading downtown or north can use Avenida Universitaria, the Miraflores roundabout, Nicaragua, Río de Janeiro, and Calle Venezuela. Starting August 5, road rehabilitation will extend to the Borja Yerovi sector, where El Telégrafo, El Universo, and El Norte streets, totaling 1,224 meters and connected to the Iñaquito station, will be affected by partial closures for 30 days.

The project includes essential tasks such as milling the asphalt, preparing and compacting the surface, laying new asphalt or paving stones, repairing curbs and sidewalks, and renewing road markings. A detailed mobility plan, coordinated by the Secretariat of Mobility and other agencies, will be in place for each affected street to manage traffic and minimize inconvenience.
