Ancient Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi proposed that education relying on rewards and punishments is the most basic and least effective method. He argued that when external motivators like carrots or sticks are necessary, the intrinsic desire to perform a task is already lost.

Zhuangzi, who championed freedom, natural living, and inner wisdom, believed that modern educational systems often depend too heavily on external controls such as grades, rankings, and the fear of failure. He suggested these tools do not constitute true education but rather a form of conditioning, treating students like animals to be driven instead of independent minds.

This approach, he contended, replaces genuine understanding with a simple transaction: perform an action to receive a reward, or face punishment for refusal. Zhuangzi, a central figure in Daoism during China's Warring States period, emphasized that excessive rules and government controls could harm human nature.

His philosophy contrasted with Confucianism's focus on social roles and duties, and Legalism's reliance on strict laws. Zhuangzi believed true learning and living in harmony with the Dao required an inner change, achieved through spontaneous, natural action (ziran), rather than forced obedience. He famously illustrated his preference for freedom and an ordinary life over power and status by refusing a prime minister position, likening himself to a turtle that would rather drag its tail through the mud than be preserved in a box.
