Racing Club dismisses coach Gustavo Costas after poor run

Racing Club has parted ways with head coach Gustavo Costas, a decision announced Saturday by club president Diego Milito. The move comes after a string of disappointing results, most notably the team's elimination from the Copa Sudamericana.

Costas, who had his contract extended until the end of the 2028 season earlier in 2026, will bid farewell to the squad on Sunday. The club's management, led by Milito, will now begin the search for his replacement.

Sources close to Costas expressed surprise at the decision, highlighting his achievements, including two international titles – the Copa Sudamericana in 2024 and the Recopa Sudamericana in 2025 – and reaching a final in the Clausura 2025 tournament. They noted that while the current semester was poor, his overall record over two and a half years was positive.

However, the club cited recent poor performances and a perceived lack of agreement on player acquisitions and the promotion of young talent as reasons for the change. Costas, who had become the first Racing coach this century to start three consecutive seasons, will manage his final training session on Sunday. The team is preparing for upcoming matches in the Copa Sudamericana and Copa Argentina.
