Radiographers play key role in early tuberculosis detection among Indonesian migrant workers

A clear chest X-ray can reveal tuberculosis in prospective Indonesian migrant workers even when a physical examination shows no obvious symptoms. That makes radiographers an important part of the health screening process before workers leave the country.

Radiographers take chest images designed to identify signs of pulmonary tuberculosis, including infiltrates, cavities and pleural effusion. They also ensure that each worker is positioned correctly, takes a full breath during the examination and receives the appropriate radiation exposure. Images must be clear and free of artifacts so radiologists can assess possible abnormalities.

The screening requirement forms part of Indonesia’s broader system for protecting migrant workers. Law No. 18 of 2017 requires prospective Indonesian migrant workers to be physically and mentally healthy. Health examinations are regulated through standards covering the examination process, approved facilities, health certificates, reporting and oversight.

The system requires every prospective migrant worker headed overseas to hold a health certificate stating that the worker is healthy or fit to work. The Health Ministry has also set examination tariffs, defined standards for health facilities, developed a health information system and introduced barcodes on fit-to-work certificates.
