Rai host Ranucci embroiled in 'summer mystery' over leaked audio

A private audio message allegedly sent by Sigfrido Ranucci, the host of Rai 3's investigative journalism program "Report," has ignited a media firestorm, dubbed "the summer's mystery." The controversy centers on journalist, influencer, and writer Valentina Pelliccia, who received the 2021 voice note.

In the audio, Ranucci reportedly spoke about alleged "mafia" and "freemasonry" within Rai, Italy's public broadcasting service. Pelliccia, who has been the subject of media attention for days, has chosen to remain silent on the advice of her lawyer, stating, "My lawyer does not want me to give interviews."

The unfolding situation has attracted a diverse cast of characters, including social media influencers and associates of Ranucci. Writer Fulvio Abbate described the affair as a "caravanserai of chatter, gossip, and tiktoker" surrounding the "sacred temple of investigative journalism."

Adding another layer to the intrigue, businessman Valter Lavitola, who is under investigation for allegedly ordering a bomb attack on Ranucci, had previously suggested alternative theories to journalists. However, like Pelliccia, Lavitola has also opted for silence, sending definitive WhatsApp messages like, "Please excuse me, but do not call me anymore."

Further complicating matters, Rita De Crescenzo, an influencer, revealed she knows Lavitola's former bodyguard, Clesio Tavares Gomes, who is also under investigation and reportedly returning to Italy on August 5. De Crescenzo stated she trusts Gomes implicitly, having been his employer. Meanwhile, Maria Rosaria Boccia, a close friend of Ranucci, has publicly supported him, asserting he is under political attack. The former senator Sergio De Gregorio has also weighed in, describing Lavitola as a "charming man" who "brings trouble," while also casting doubt on "Report's" handling of information he claims to have submitted about Lavitola's affairs in 2021.
