Railway bridge in Hamburg-Altona demolished by controlled explosion

A significant infrastructure project in Hamburg-Altona reached a milestone as a railway bridge was demolished using controlled explosions on the afternoon of July 25, 2026. The operation, executed by Deutsche Bahn, was described as proceeding according to plan by the project manager.

The structure, known as the Langenfelde intersection structure, was built in 1930 and weighed approximately 540 tons. Its removal is a crucial step in the larger initiative to relocate the long-distance train station from Altona to Diebsteich. The bridge, spanning over 100 meters and measuring 10 meters wide, previously carried two long-distance and regional train tracks while five tracks ran beneath it.

"Cutting charges" were strategically placed, particularly at the bridge supports, to bring the structure down in a controlled manner. The area surrounding the demolition site was cordoned off, and S-Bahn train services were temporarily suspended. For safety reasons, the nearby Diebsteich cemetery was also closed on Saturday.

The demolition clears the way for new track configurations required for the relocated station, marking a significant advancement in the modernization of Hamburg's railway infrastructure.
