Rain delays harvest but not flavor: 5 tons per decare expected for Ayaş tomatoes

Ayaş tomatoes, a variety registered with geographical indication in 2022, are now ripening and ready for harvest in Turkey. The unique climate and soil of the region contribute to the tomato's distinct flavor, which is now available to consumers in markets and directly from the fields.

For years, locals in Ayaş have practiced harvesting tomatoes by hand from fields along the Beypazarı road. Visitors can pick their own tomatoes, fill provided bags, and pay by weight. Ekrem Orman, a tomato grower whose family has cultivated the crop for generations, highlighted the Ayaş tomato's superior taste and aroma compared to other varieties. "It has a different appearance, it's juicier. Its aroma is very different from others. It has a slightly sour taste compared to other tomatoes. Its skin is thin," he said.

This season's harvest was slightly delayed due to heavy spring rains and cooler weather, according to Orman. While the rains brought some plant disease, he expressed gratitude for the overall good yield. Orman, who also grows cucumbers, watermelons, melons, and peppers on 5 decares, has 8 decares dedicated to tomatoes, expecting around 5 tons per decare. The current price is about 50 Turkish lira per kilogram, though he anticipates it may decrease later.

Orman emphasized that while many tomatoes are sold as "Ayaş tomatoes" year-round, the authentic variety is only available from early August to mid-October. He cautioned consumers to distinguish the genuine product by its taste and appearance. Eyüphan Orkoç, a customer, praised the freshness, noting that tomatoes picked directly from the field are superior to those that may spoil by the time they reach the market. He described the aroma inside the car after purchasing tomatoes and peppers as wonderfully fragrant.
