Rain returns to Uruguay with sharp regional differences

Uruguay is set to experience a return of rainfall, but with significant regional disparities. While southern areas, including Montevideo and its metropolitan region, will see little precipitation in the coming days, the northeast is bracing for heavy showers starting Sunday.

Meteorologist Mario Bidegain explained that Montevideo and its surrounding areas can expect scant rainfall, estimated at one to three millimeters, on Wednesday and Thursday. The weather will remain cool and mostly cloudy, but temperatures are projected to climb towards the weekend, with a high of 17° Celsius expected on Saturday. More substantial rain, between 10 to 15 millimeters, is forecast for Sunday, continuing into the early hours of Monday.

Bidegain expressed concern over the upcoming rainfall in the northeast, along the border with Brazil. Following some showers and storms on Wednesday, this region is predicted to experience continuous precipitation from Sunday through Tuesday, with accumulated rainfall ranging from 75 to 100 millimeters. A map shared by Bidegain illustrates this diagonal pattern across Uruguay, highlighting the northern, northeastern, and eastern departments as the most affected, while the south and southwest will receive significantly less rain.

The Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) forecasts cold days with overcast skies and scattered showers for Montevideo and the metropolitan area. For Wednesday, it predicts a minimum of 5° and a maximum of 11° Celsius with scarce precipitation. Thursday is expected to have similar temperatures (6° to 11°) with probable light rain. Friday will see temperatures between 7° and 15° with low chances of rain, and Saturday will be warmer (9° to 17°) with little rain expected. Sunday will bring temperatures from 10° to 16° with a moderate chance of rain.
