Rain to return this week with chance of thunderstorms and flooding

The United Kingdom is bracing for a shift in weather patterns as rain is set to return this week, bringing with it the possibility of thunderstorms and localized flooding. While drier conditions will persist into Monday for most areas, Tuesday is expected to see low pressure systems moving in from the southwest, ushering in showery conditions for parts of southern England and south Wales.

By Wednesday, the forecast indicates more widespread downpours across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, though Scotland may remain largely dry. The latter half of the week, from Wednesday evening through Friday, carries an increased risk of torrential downpours, potentially accompanied by hail and thunderstorms. Southern England and Wales are identified as the most vulnerable areas, where heavy rain falling on dry, hard ground could lead to localized flooding.

This incoming rainfall is a welcome development for drought-affected regions, but meteorologists caution that it will take considerable time and cumulative precipitation for drought conditions to fully abate. River levels and soil moisture will see some improvement, but reservoirs and groundwater stores require sustained rainfall to return to normal levels. The British Geological Survey notes that significant, cumulative rainfall over an extended period is necessary to officially end a drought.

Despite the return of wet weather, warmer air is expected to move in from southern Europe. Temperatures are predicted to climb, reaching around 20C (68F) in Scotland and Northern Ireland by Wednesday. In England and Wales, particularly in the southeast, temperatures could approach 28 or 29C (82-84F) by midweek. However, this period of warmth is anticipated to be brief, with current models suggesting temperatures are unlikely to reach heatwave thresholds again before the end of August.
