Rains persist in Bocas del Toro; authorities warn of rising rivers

Bocas del Toro, Panama – Emergency authorities are closely monitoring several rivers and streams in the Bocas del Toro province as heavy rains persist in the mountainous regions. The districts of Changuinola and Almirante are particularly affected, with officials warning residents living near the waterways about the dangers of sudden flash floods, locally known as "cabezas de agua." Authorities urge people to avoid using the rivers for bathing or washing clothes due to the risk of unexpected surges. They emphasize that even if rainfall is not intense in some communities, precipitation in higher elevations can cause sudden river level increases, posing a significant threat to the population. The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) is also addressing road damage caused by the rains in Chiriquí Grande and Bocas del Toro. Furthermore, several areas are without potable water service following damage to pipelines. Emergency teams are coordinating water distribution to affected families while assessments and necessary repairs are underway.
