Panama evaluates emergency projects to repair weather-damaged roads in Bocas del Toro and Colón

Panama's Ministry of Public Works is assessing emergency projects to repair infrastructure damaged by recent severe weather in the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Colón. Minister José Luis Andrade stated that these projects aim to improve and adapt critical points affected by the adverse weather system.

Andrade explained that the proposed projects, which include repairs to roads, bridges, and even a cemetery, will be submitted to the Cabinet Council for approval in the coming days. Once sanctioned, the repair work will commence immediately. "We are studying what we call emergency points. We are receiving quotes, we are evaluating, but, as I said yesterday in the Cabinet Council, I will take it to the Cabinet Council to request approval and then the work will begin," Andrade said.

Regarding specific concerns about damaged roads in Bocas del Toro, particularly the stretch leading to Chiriquí Grande, the minister clarified that the approach involves punctual emergency projects rather than a broad plan. These projects are designed for rapid execution once they receive the Cabinet's endorsement. "Quickly? Yes, yes, that is immediate. That starts as soon as it is approved in the Cabinet Council," Andrade indicated, adding that the presentation of these projects is expected within the next one to two weeks.

The province of Colón will also receive attention through these emergency projects, with specific mention of damage in Gobea and along the northern coast. The ministry's swift action aims to mitigate the impact of the weather on essential infrastructure and communities in the affected regions.
