A political row has erupted in Uttar Pradesh between the ruling BJP and the Congress over an alleged fish feast during a welcome program for state Congress chief Ajay Rai in Ayodhya. The controversy intensified as the event occurred during Sawan, a month considered sacred by many Hindus.

The BJP has accused the Congress of disrespecting religious sentiments. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directly criticized Rai, stating, "You saw the behavior of the Congress state president: he goes to offer prayers at Hanumangarhi, but later outside he enjoys a feast of fish." Adityanath questioned Rai's decision to partake in the feast after visiting the temple, suggesting he could have eaten elsewhere. He further accused the Congress of duplicity, remarking, "Even a chameleon would be put to shame by these people. It would wonder what kind of human species this is -- chanting 'Ram-Ram' inside the temple and feasting on fish the moment they step out."

UP Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar echoed the criticism, telling PTI that holding a fish feast during Sawan is "way too much." He added, "Congress does whatever it likes. Congress leaders are experts at everything."

However, Ajay Rai has denied personally participating in any fish feast and challenged Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to produce evidence. "The CM is criticising; does the CM have any photos? If he can produce any pictures, I will be ready to resign immediately," Rai stated. He explained that he attended a program organized by the Nishad community, whose traditional livelihood includes fishing, and any food prepared was their concern. Rai later clarified that the gathering was linked to the community's traditional occupation.
