Rangpur killings: Charge sheet expected within days

Bangladesh’s Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu said a charge sheet could be submitted within days in the killing of four members of a family in Rangpur city.

“Hopefully, within a few days, we will be able to submit a charge sheet following a proper investigation and ensure that the trial is completed as quickly as possible,” he said during a visit to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Jinnat Ali, officer-in-charge of the Rangpur Metropolitan Detective Branch and the case’s investigating officer, said the Criminal Investigation Department had collected 35 pieces of evidence from the crime scene. The material was sent to the CID forensic laboratory on Thursday for DNA testing.

Police recovered the bodies of former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and their son Priyam Chakraborty, 12, from their home in the Daspara, also known as Machhuapara, area at about 11 p.m. on August 22. Police said the four had been strangled the previous day.

Two youths from the same area, Siddhartha Das, 19, and Mugdha Das, 23, were arrested on August 23 in connection with the killings.
