Rangpur Killings: Relief Minister Expects Charge Sheet Within Days

Bangladesh’s relief minister said a charge sheet could be submitted within days in the killings of four members of a family in Rangpur, while investigators await forensic results.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu made the remarks during an unannounced visit to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. He said the perpetrators would be brought to justice through a fair investigation and described the killings as unprecedented in Rangpur.

What matters most to us is to identify the actual culprits and anyone else involved in the killings through a fair investigation and bring them to justice.

The Criminal Investigation Department collected 35 pieces of evidence from the crime scene and sent them to its forensic laboratory for DNA testing, said Jinnat Ali, officer-in-charge of the Rangpur Metropolitan DB and the case’s investigating officer. He said the results would help investigators scientifically verify statements from two youths arrested in connection with the case.

Hopefully, within a few days, we will be able to submit a charge sheet following a proper investigation and ensure that the trial is completed as quickly as possible.

Police recovered the bodies of former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and their son Priyam Chakraborty, 12, from their home in Rangpur’s Daspara area around 11 p.m. on August 22. Police said the four were strangled on the morning of August 21.

Officers arrested Siddhartha Das, 19, and Mugdha Das, 23, from the same area early on August 23. The slain teacher’s elder brother, Gopinath Chakraborty, filed a murder case against unidentified people at Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station that day.

Once we receive the forensic report, we will be able to scientifically verify the statements given by the two youths arrested in connection with the killings. We are waiting for the forensic report.
