Rare Antelope-Zebra Hybrid-Looking Okapi Reappears After Long Absence

The okapi, a rare animal with an antelope-like body and zebra-striped legs, has reappeared in an area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo after a long absence.

The Congo is the only country in the world that is home to the okapi. Sometimes called the “African unicorn,” the species lives in tropical forests and has become a symbol of Central Africa’s rainforest ecosystem.

Okapis mainly inhabit dense forests in eastern and central Congo. Their disappearance from some areas had raised concerns about the condition of their habitat and the size of their population.

Those forests face pressure from deforestation, illegal hunting and prolonged instability in some regions. The okapi’s return is therefore being viewed as an encouraging sign for wildlife conservation efforts and as a reminder of the importance of protecting natural forests, which shelter many rare endemic animals.
