Rare drone footage of suspected dumping prompts Chinese investigation

Rare drone footage showing suspected industrial dumping into the Yangtze River has prompted authorities in central China to launch an investigation.

The environment bureau in Wuhan, Hubei province, said on Monday that it had opened the inquiry together with police and transport authorities. The agencies joined forces after the footage of the alleged activity was released.

The announcement came less than two weeks after Beijing revised performance-assessment rules for officials. Under the revised rules, officials can be held accountable throughout their careers for serious environmental failures.
