Rare Experience: Woman Encounters Two-Month-Old Wolf Cubs in Pärnumaa

Merike Pikkmets experienced an extraordinary encounter on a forest road in Lääneranna municipality, Pärnumaa, on the evening of July 16. She came across a group of young wolf cubs emerging onto the road one after another. Pikkmets, who often explores nature hoping for unique sightings, initially thought she saw a jackal from a distance. However, as more cubs appeared from the grass, she realized they were wolf pups. She managed to capture the moment on video after an initial attempt to photograph them proved too distant. While she had seen wolves before, this was her first time capturing them on film. Pikkmets exited her car to film, feeling secure due to the vehicle's proximity and the absence of the parent wolves. The video shows the curious cubs interacting and exploring the road before disappearing back into the woods. Wildlife expert Laura Kiiroja identified the cubs as being just over two months old. She explained that at this age, wolf cubs are active, playful, and venturing further from their dens in preparation for hunting with their parents. Kiiroja noted that their high curiosity and lack of fear towards potential threats, like Pikkmets, is typical for young animals. She estimates the litter consisted of six cubs, which is an average size, but cautioned that the mortality rate for wolf cubs in the wild is unfortunately high.
