Ravu remains on backbench post-acquittal

Months after his acquittal on charges of interfering with a ministerial investigation, former Fisheries and Forestry Minister Kalaveti Ravu continues to sit on the government backbench. Ravu was accused of interfering with an investigation into the suspected trade of banned beche-de-mer.

Despite being cleared of criminal charges in January, Ravu expressed uncertainty about his return to Cabinet. "I have no ideas on that. I can’t say much on that. It depends on the party," he stated, adding that he has not discussed the matter with anyone, including the Prime Minister.

His continued absence from ministerial roles contrasts with other coalition MPs who have resumed their positions after facing allegations or legal scrutiny and subsequently being cleared. These include Lynda Tabuya, Aseri Radrodro, Jese Saukuru, and Manoa Kamikamica. However, an acquittal on criminal charges does not automatically guarantee a return to Cabinet, as ministerial appointments are political decisions made by the Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, former Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad is the sole former Cabinet minister currently facing criminal charges.
