RC Lens shocks PSG to claim first French Super Cup title

RC Lens secured their first-ever French Super Cup title by defeating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in a match marked by disciplinary issues for the latter.

Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage for over 50 minutes, RC Lens managed to hold on to their lead. The decisive goal came in the 32nd minute from Florian Thauvin. Although the goal initially appeared to be offside, it was ultimately validated, giving Lens the advantage.

Paris Saint-Germain, who had recently celebrated a significant victory in the European Super Cup, found themselves unable to equalize. Their task became considerably harder when Kylian Antonio was sent off seven minutes after the goal for a harsh tackle. The team, under the guidance of Luis Enrique, pressed for an equalizer with attempts from players like Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé, but their efforts were consistently thwarted.

The situation for PSG worsened in the final minutes when Nuno Mendes also received a red card, leaving the team with nine players on the field. This victory marks a historic achievement for RC Lens, whose previous best performance in the competition was a runner-up finish in 1998, also against PSG.

Both teams are set to begin their Ligue 1 season soon. PSG will face Rennes on August 23rd, while RC Lens is scheduled to play Auxerre on August 22nd.
