Real Madrid sign Cucurella from Chelsea in first transfer since Mourinho's return

Real Madrid has secured the signing of Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, bringing him to the Santiago Bernabéu on a six-year deal.

The transfer, announced on Monday, June 15, represents the first acquisition for Real Madrid since the high-profile return of Jose Mourinho as manager. Financial terms were not disclosed, but reports suggest the deal could be worth up to 51.8 million pounds ($69.5 million).

Cucurella's move comes after a period of rebuilding for Real Madrid, who endured a disappointing 2025-26 season, failing to secure the LaLiga title and exiting the Champions League in the quarterfinals. Club president Florentino Perez had pledged to strengthen the team's defense during his recent re-election campaign.

The 27-year-old defender arrived at Chelsea in 2022 from Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported fee of up to 63 million pounds. His time at Stamford Bridge was marked by inconsistency, particularly in his first season. However, he later became a regular starter under manager Enzo Maresca, often playing as an inverted full-back. During his tenure, he contributed to Chelsea winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup in 2025. Cucurella has also established himself as a key player for the Spanish national team, earning 23 caps and winning the European Championship in 2024.

His departure follows public criticism of Chelsea's recruitment strategy, where he advocated for a better balance between youth and experience. Chelsea concluded the 2025-26 Premier League season in 10th place, missing out on European competition.
