Rebel Wilson wins defamation lawsuit filed by actress from her film

The Federal Court of Australia has dismissed a defamation lawsuit brought by actress Charlotte MacInnes against Australian actress and director Rebel Wilson. The court ruled that MacInnes did not succeed in demonstrating that Wilson's online publications caused significant harm to her reputation.

Justice Elizabeth Raper rejected the legal action and ordered MacInnes to bear the costs of the lawsuit. The case stemmed from a series of social media messages Wilson posted in 2024. In these posts, Wilson alleged that MacInnes had been a victim of sexual harassment during the filming of 'The Deb,' Wilson's directorial debut.

MacInnes, who starred in the film, denied the allegations of sexual harassment against producer Amanda Ghost. She contended that Wilson's claims were false and had severely damaged her reputation, seeking damages. During the trial, Wilson maintained that her posts were truthful, stating MacInnes had described an incident in 2023 as "uncomfortable."

The judge concluded that while MacInnes did alter her account of the episode, merely stating that someone changed their version of events does not necessarily constitute defamation. The court also determined that one of Wilson's posts referred to MacInnes, but its content was not deemed defamatory. Crucially, MacInnes failed to prove substantial damage to her reputation, a requirement under Australian defamation law.

Following the verdict, Wilson celebrated the decision on Instagram, thanking the judge and the Australian judicial system, and expressed her hope to "move on" from the dispute.
